Question I am a non-resident parent, I am having difficulties keeping in contact with my child/children. How can the Association for Shared Parenting help me ?
Answer ASP can help you in a number of ways. Through our advice shops, our magazine and telephone advice line we can:
  1. Explain how the court system works
  2. Help you to choose a soloicitor and advise you on how to make the best use of their services.
  3. Help you to "act in person" at court, if that is what you feel is best.
  4. Help to prepare for meetings with the Family Court Welfare Service.
  5. Advise you on how to present yourself in court and, above all....
  6. ....reassure you that your children's needs come first and that there are many people who will support you in putting those needs ahead of everything else.
Question How can I contact someone to speak to at ASP ?
Answer
  • ASP has a national phone line - 01789 750891 - available 24 hours a day, where you can leave a message and someone will call you back as soon as possible.
  • ASP has several satellite branches dotted around the country. There may be an ASP representative near you who you can phone. Please go to the Contacts page for details.
  • Local ASP branches hold regular drop-in advice shops (meetings) where members of the public with specific problems can attend in person and meet ASP representatives and other people with similar problems. Please go to the Contacts page for details.
Question I am a woman with difficulties keeping in contact with my children, who do not live with me. Is ASP for me ?
Answer Yes, definitely. ASP makes no distinction between the sexes of the people who we help. ASP recognises that women as well as men can be non-resident parents and can face exactly the same problems and frustrations as men when it comes to maintaining a meaningful relationship with their children.

Question I am considering attending one of the ASP advice shops (listed on the Contacts page), will I have to pay for any advice I receive ?
Answer ASP is a registered charity and as such we very much depend on public donations and contributions. Local ASP representatives who hold advice shops usually make a charge to all attendees to cover the cost of the hire of the venue, and refreshments (tea, coffee, biscuits etc). A typical charge for attendees at advice shops is; £3.00 for the waged or £2.00 for the unwaged.

Attendees who are also ASP members (see the Membership page) are charged only at the lower rate.

Question I am a non-resident parent. Apart from my concerns over my relationship with my child/children I have also recently been contacted by the Child Support Agency. Can ASP help me sort out my Maintenance Assessment ?
Answer It is outside of the remit of ASP to offer any meaningful advice on any matters to do with divorce/separation other than parents' relationship/contact with their children. In this instance we would direct you to a CSA-specific self-help group such as NACSA for help with CSA matters.
